If you’re working in Australia as a cabinet maker and would like to stay long-term, a good option is to be sponsored by your employer. Fortunately, cabinet maker is on the skilled occupation list in Australia, which makes employer sponsorship a viable pathway to remain in the country.

Cabinet maker is on the Core Skills Occupation List

The occupation Cabinet Maker (ANZSCO Code 394111) is included on the Core Skills Occupation List. This means that employers across both metropolitan and regional Australia can sponsor qualified cabinet makers for work visas.

Which visas can a cabinet maker apply for?

Cabinet makers may be eligible for several employer-sponsored visa options, including:

  • Temporary Skill Shortage (TSS) visa (subclass 482) – Core Skills stream & Specialist Skills stream

  • Employer Nomination Scheme (ENS) visa (subclass 186) – A permanent residence visa

  • Skilled Employer Sponsored Regional (Provisional) visa (subclass 494) – For those working in designated regional areas

What does your employer need to do?

To sponsor you, your employer must:

  1. Be an approved Standard Business Sponsor, or apply to become one

  2. Advertise the role for at least 4 weeks (labour market testing)

(Contact us to check if your employer can skip this step)

  3. Offer a salary that:

    • Meets the Core Skills Income Threshold: currently AUD $73,150, increasing to $76,515 from 1 July 2025; and

    • Meets or exceeds the market salary rate for a cabinet maker

  4. Show that the position is genuine and that you meet the relevant skills and experience for the role

Additional requirements

  • You must meet the English language requirement

  • You must pass health and character checks

  • Your experience and qualifications must align with ANZSCO standards for cabinet makers

·       A skills assessment may be required for cabinet makers from some countries (eg Brazil).

Already in Australia?

If you're already in Australia on a student visa, working holiday visa, or bridging visa, you’re in a better position to explore employer sponsorship. Being in the country allows you to build relationships with employers and demonstrate your skills firsthand.

Just make sure to understand the conditions of your current visa and whether you’re eligible to apply for a new visa from within Australia.
